Our Anchor Program is the heart of NYC Men Teach
NYC Men Teach calls its incoming teachers ‘Anchors.’ In a relay race, the anchor runs the final leg of the race to ensure that the entire team has the best chance at winning. Anchors drive to have a strong finish and rely heavily on their teammates – the ones who ran before them to ensure the win. In NYC Men Teach, our ‘team’ is made up of current and retired teachers, school administrators, community members, and the NYC Men Teach programming team in the Department of Education. As a classroom teacher, you will be the Anchor in this race to pass the baton on to your students to increase educational opportunities for them.
Anchors are able to start their path towards teacher certification through either an alternative certification program or a traditional certification program.
Alternative certification programs place you directly into a full-time classroom teaching position with salary and full benefits. You would experience a robust training period in order to begin teaching, and then continue taking night classes working towards certification at a partner university.
Traditional certification programs are found at New York State colleges and universities most likely in the School of Education. You would enroll in a two-year Master’s degree program to then be placed in a classroom after successful completion of coursework. NYCMT is proud to partner with The City University of New York to offer Anchors a variety of traditional certification programs both at the graduate and undergraduate levels across 9 senior campuses.

If not yet ready to commit to a traditional certification program or not yet eligible for an alternative certification program, we encourage you to explore our Village Pathway programs, which are for aspiring teachers still working towards a degree or those with no previous classroom experience interested in becoming a teacher.
If you are already certified to teach in a state outside of New York and want to teach in New York City, we urge you to research the NYS Teacher Reciprocity Process.

Have you already graduated from a certification program and already attained New York State certification, and now looking for placement in a DOE public school?
You might be eligible to go straight into the classroom! If so, all you need to do is complete a New Teacher Application at http://www.teachnyc.net.
